“Students storming the 7 p.m. Board of Trustees meeting were pepper sprayed by police. The students had gathered in protest of the two-tier pricing policy recently instituted at Santa Monica College. The board was going to allow 15 student speakers, and protesters were chanting “let us in!” Police were trying to clear the area because of the potential fire hazard presented by the crowd, but the disgruntled crowd pushed forward, and police drew their clubs and pepper sprayed protesters.”

There’s a hall of mirrors quality to this Huff Post piece on the upcoming Young Adult and what it says about narcissism — the publication is the only one I can think of which references itself in its articles as much as Mailer in his heyday (or the character of George Remus from Boardwalk Empire).  One is reminded of the phrase “takes one to know one,” albeit on an institutional level….

(Incidentally, if Diablo Cody does, indeed, win another Oscar for Best Original Screenplay (which she absolutely deserves, IMHO), she will have earned it as much for having to endure the rigors of this sort of dog-and-pony show as for her wonderful script.)

Westwood is about to lose another movie theatre — the Avco Center Cinema on Wilshire is closing on December 4th, most likely to make way for condos or another office building. Basically, that means there are officially going to be more hookah bars in Westwood Village than movie theatres. Read into that sad fact what you will about what’s happened to the once glorious mecca of Los Angeles moviegoing.
